California Organic - A Vision For the Future

I moved to central California as a teenager with the unlikely intention of following the Grateful Dead. I landed instead in the most fertile region of the Golden State. Rich with Salinas Valley loam and Central Valley heat, I arrived in the fruit and vegetable capital of the world. At the same time, organic agriculture was spreading its influence across the bountiful landscape, creeping into strawberry production, baby lettuce mixes, sweet peaches, and pears. California was the cradle of organic agriculture, nurturing an agrarian child that would quickly grow to be a formidable presence.

7 Reasons You Need to Start a Home Garden Today

I, for one, never really cared about gardening.

The whole “start a home garden” trend seemed like another part of the organic eating phase. If you’re still on the fence about starting your own garden because you don’t buy into the organic trend, I get you. Really.

Even if you want to eat organic food, you may need some convincing to commit to a home garden. It does take some work, and you may need to persuade your family to help, as well.

Regenerative Agriculture - How Does it Intersect With Organic?

The term Regenerative Agriculture has generated quite a buzz in the last several months. Farmers, ranchers, and many companies across the U.S. are embracing the term as a way to heal the planet and combat climate change. Some promote it as the next big stage for food and farming calling it “Beyond Organic.” What exactly is this new farming philosophy and will it take root to become the next big food movement? What does it mean for organic?

The Bioponic Debate - Are There Bigger Fish to Fry?

I can smell it; spring is just around the corner. While some areas of the country are still under winter’s frigid grip, elongated English cucumbers are flourishing in shade houses near the Mexican border. Tantalizing heirloom tomatoes, curvaceous eggplant, and thick zucchini are growing in various mediums of soil and soil-less technologies. They fill our winter plate.

Can Organic Soil Trump Climate Change?

The names bluster through in a destructive alphabetical roll call, Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria. Like apocalyptic horsemen, the storms sweeping through the Atlantic all reached category four and higher. Fueled by super-warm ocean currents, this unusually active hurricane season provides devastating evidence that our planet is warming. Our climate is changing.

8 Ways to Be the Change This Holiday Season

In the words of Gandhi, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

This is a time of great transformation, and we can choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution. Lead by example and use this holiday to share with your family and friends, your love for them and the planet.  Make choices that tread lighter on our earth and possibly teach others to become conscious custodians.

Seven Reasons to Make the Holiday Organic

The tilt of our magnificent globe has brought us round leaning towards the darkness. Thus we seek out colored lights, baubles, tinsel, and song. This whirl of the winter solstice means the light will once again be born, and so we celebrate. You may lavish gifts, or sing choruses of carols. The glow of the menorah may light up your latkes. Or perhaps you are one who, with great humbuggery, rejects the entire pageant and goes on a tropical vacation.

Honoring Those Who Serve it Forth - Our Agricultural Workers

A Sustainable System?

I live and work in California, the farming capital of the world; hub of agriculture, intersecting food, chefs, and farmers. It is the state that produces the most food in the country, home to the world’s smallest and largest organic farms, and boasts the greatest diversity in farming systems and farm workers. Yet the lack of food and agricultural literacy is tremendous, and the bond between the farm worker and the eater is ill understood.

Green Divas' 25 Ways to Eat More Sustainably

With my disappointment about genetically engineered salmon being pushed to be approved for food (and a slew of other disappointing news about food regulations), I wanted to shift gears into thinking of more positive ways of eating and revisiting the ways to eat more sustainably. Although you probably know most of it, I figured, it wouldn’t hurt to check the list again.
