However, the majority of these diets fail because they are not sustainable. Smart dieters know that no fad is going to secure long term weight loss.

While abs are made in the gym, they are also forged in the kitchen. In order to have the body of your dreams, it is crucial to eat a balanced and healthy diet on a consistent basis. That’s why the top diets of 2019 don’t focus on shedding pounds in record time. They are sustainable lifestyle changes that promise an increase in health and a decrease in waistline.

Mediterranean Diet

The consistent reigning champion of diets, the Mediterranean diet, allows dieters to consume plenty of fresh and delicious foods while losing weight and improving their health. One of the other reasons why fad diets fail is because they leave dieters hungry. This leads to a frustrating cycle of restricting calories and binging, leading to yo-yo weight gain.

The Mediterranean diet avoids fluctuating weight by providing healthy, satiating fats and a fully balanced diet consisting of various food groups that emulate the traditional diet of the Mediterranean people. The main components of the diet are veggies, fruits, seeds, nuts, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, breads, fish, seafood, extra virgin olive oil, herbs, and spices. Moderate amounts of eggs, cheese, yogurt, and poultry are also allowed, with red meat consumed in moderation. Cut out of the diet are sugar drinks, added sugars, processed meats, refined oils and grains, and all overly processed foods are also omitted.  

Keto Diet

Another of the consistently most successful diets is the keto diet. The keto food pyramid consists of ingesting 75 percent of calories from fat, 20 percent from protein, and 5 percent from carbs. Overall, the keto diet eschews sugar and carbs in favor of healthy fats and proteins. This way dieters are never left hungry like they are in low-fat diets since fat is what satiates people and prevents food cravings that lead to binge eating.

By keeping carb intake low, the keto diet allows the body to enter into a state of ketosis. In this state, the body uses fat as the main fuel source for bodily functions, allowing fat to be rapidly burned. This allows many people to experience significant weight loss while following a keto diet meal plan, and it also provides optimal health for the body by getting rid of unhealthy properties such as sugar. Most importantly, the keto diet allows people to lose weight naturally, which aids the diet in being a sustainable lifestyle change.  

Flexitarian Diet

Another popular diet option that proves to be sustainable for dieters and more conscious of the planet is the flexitarian diet. Many people want to reap the benefits of plant-based, whole-food diets but are unable to entirely give up meat. The flexitarian diet is an excellent solution for transitioning to vegetarianism or for simply taking off pounds while helping the planet. The flexitarian diet meal plan focuses on plant-based foods, though small amounts of animal products and meat are allowed.

This diet mostly focuses on eating fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains, with protein sources coming from plants as opposed to animals or animal products. However, it does have the flexibility to include animal products and meat in small amounts. Additionally, processed food is swapped out in favor of the most natural forms of items, while sugars are limited. The flexitarian diet is popular for many people because it has flexibility in meal planning that other plant-based diets do not. This allows for people to reap the benefits of plant-based diets while not entirely giving up meat and animal products.

Overall, the effectiveness of any diet depends on a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Diets should not be thought of as something done for small amounts of time in order to shed weight, but rather they should be viewed as permanent and positive lifestyle changes.
