It’s exciting, isn’t it?

You’ve been wanting to grow your own garden.

Just thinking about the wonderful plants you can grow gives you a feeling of joy, but you’re a little fearful as well.

What if you aren’t successful? What if your plants don’t grow well? And what if you plant them in the wrong place?

Don’t worry.

There are some simple steps you can plan to grow your best garden.

1. Find Out How Much Space Your Garden Needs

Size matters.

That’s especially true when it comes to your garden.

You might have a large yard near your house. You might have a smaller one. Or you could be living in an apartment with just a balcony.

You just need to find out the space you have for your garden. Because it will help you understand the type of plants and the number of plants you can grow.

Even if you have a large yard, you might want only a few plants. Because it’s easier to maintain a smaller garden.

This estimate of space will also help you plan the plants you can grow in the garden without forcing them to compete with resources.

2. Pick The Right Place For Your Garden

Being in the right place at the right time.

And that holds for the plants in your garden as well.

Your garden should be in the right spot so that the plants can get the essential elements that they need.

Sunlight

Sunlight is crucial for your plants.

Plants that are warm-season need plenty of sunlight to grow healthy. It’s good that they get at least 6 to 8 hours of sun. The cool-season plants don’t need as much sun and could be grown in the shade of the warm-season ones.

It’s best to plant the tall plants at the north end of the garden, medium-sized plants in the center, and the short ones at the south end. This will help all the plants get plenty of sunlight without any plants blocking the light.

Soil

It’s important that your plants get the rich, friable soil they need to grow well.

But your yard might not have suitable soil for the plants. It may be full of sand or clay. You need to check for a good place in the yard or change the soil to something suitable for the plants.

You can either add rich compost to the soil to change it, use a raised bed that contains the right soil for the plants, or make use of containers with good potting soil.

Water

Plants will need a lot of water.

If you have a small garden, you can water the plants every few days with a watering can. But if the garden is large, you’ll need to use a sprinkler system or a drip irrigation system.

To save you some time, you could grow your garden near a water source. This will make it convenient for you while watering the plants.

3. Choose The Layout That Is Best For Your Garden

The layout of your garden depends on the space you have and the plants you want to grow in them.

If you have a large garden space, you may consider an in-ground garden. You plant the plants in rows with space between the rows so that it’s easy to move around tiling the soil or removing weeds. You do need to have fertile soil in your yard to have an in-ground garden. If you don’t already have the fertile soil, you can build a raised bed garden. You can create the raised bed as a mound or in a wooden frame and fill it with 6 to 8 inches of potting soil and compost.

If you live in a small space like an apartment, you can’t use traditional gardening methods, you can use container gardening where you grow the plants in pots. You add a mixture of potting soil and compost in the pots and grow plants in them. Container gardening makes your garden quite portable. You can move your plants indoors for protection if you feel the weather is turning cold.

Another way of growing plants in a small space is with vertical gardening. You grow your plants vertically by providing them some sort of vertical support using a trellis, arbor, or wall. This method provides better air circulation to your plants. It also protects them from pests, diseases, and weeds. Vertical gardening can be used with the other types of gardening such as in-ground, raised bed and container gardening.

Conclusion

Put your fears to rest.

Planning your garden will help your plants will grow healthy, have the best odds of producing flowers, herbs, or vegetables, and you’ll have a successful garden.

So you should be excited about growing your garden.

It’s time to start.
